Following a new segmentation of research fields by the Italian Ministry of University, which formalizes the institutional recognition of public archaeology as a field of research, this paper aims to contribute to the debate on the discipline’s methodological foundations. It explores the application of citizen science theories and methods to participatory archaeological re-search, defined here as “citizen archaeology”. Considering opportunities for scientific edu-cation and research, as well as challenges related to data quality and work ethics, the poten-tial contribution of these approaches to establishing a more structured epistemic framework for the discipline in Italy is discussed.

Abstract
Following a new segmentation of research fields by the Italian Ministry of University, which formalizes the institutional recognition of public archaeology as a field of research, this paper aims to contribute to the debate on the discipline’s methodological foundations. It explores the application of citizen science theories and methods to participatory archaeological re-search, defined here as “citizen archaeology”. Considering opportunities for scientific edu-cation and research, as well as challenges related to data quality and work ethics, the poten-tial contribution of these approaches to establishing a more structured epistemic framework for the discipline in Italy is discussed.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
