In common perception, islands are often seen as peripheral, isolated, remote and underdeveloped spaces. This essay challenges such assumptions by examining documentary sources related to the settlement of several islands in the Western Mediterranean during the 18th century. These sources reveal an under-explored insular agency, offering a reinterpretation of the settlement reorganizations of the 1700s. Rather than seeing these changes solely as the result of top-down governmental policies, the essay highlights how these processes were significantly shaped within the framework of connective networks linking islands and their inhabitants.

Abstract
In common perception, islands are often seen as peripheral, isolated, remote and underdeveloped spaces. This essay challenges such assumptions by examining documentary sources related to the settlement of several islands in the Western Mediterranean during the 18th century. These sources reveal an under-explored insular agency, offering a reinterpretation of the settlement reorganizations of the 1700s. Rather than seeing these changes solely as the result of top-down governmental policies, the essay highlights how these processes were significantly shaped within the framework of connective networks linking islands and their inhabitants.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
