Historic cemeteries constitute databases that collect extensive evidence of bourgeois realism, an artistic trend that, in the beginning of the second half of the 19th century, reflected through funerary art the taste of a new social class, eager to exalt its memory through an increasingly close imitation of forms, rules and behavior of the city of the living in that for the dead. Piedmontese sculptor Giuseppe Sartorio intercepts the social rise of the industrial and commercial bourgeoisie, with the intent to prolong, in postmortem remembrance, their participation in the community life of their time. A patronage of very often excessive taste in exhibiting the wealth economic status achieved, and often not consonant with the restraint imposed by the place. I cimiteri storici costituiscono delle banche dati che raccolgono ampie testimonianze del realismo borghese, tendenza artistica che, a partire dalla seconda metà del XIX secolo, ri- specchia, attraverso l’arte funeraria, il gusto di una nuova classe sociale, desiderosa di esaltare la propria memoria attraverso un’i- mitazione sempre più stretta di forme, regole e comportamenti della città dei vivi in quella dei morti. Lo scultore piemontese Giuseppe Sartorio riesce a intercettare l’ascesa socia- le della borghesia industriale e commerciale, con l’intento di prolungarne, nel ricordo post mortem, la partecipazione alla vita comunita- ria del suo tempo. Una committenza dal gu- sto molto spesso eccessivo nell’esibire il be- nessere economico raggiunto, e sovente non consono al ritegno imposto dal luogo.
