Vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) is a non-pharmacological, non-surgical option in the treatment of drug-resistant partial epilepsy. Although VNS implants have had a wide utilization all over the world, the mechanism of action remains largely unexplained. This study described the effects of the VNS on EEG rhythms, investigating with non-linear algorhythms the coherences among the EEG activity as detected by all leads. The improved analysis of digital EEG and the mathematical appreciation of bioelectrical signals have suggested that, although spiking activity remains unchanged, VNS can modify the synchronization of EEG activities in subjects responding to this treatment with seizure improvement.
