Le "bestie del proletariato". Rappresentazioni zoomorfe del lavoro nella Repubblica di Weimar

The article investigates the role of animal metaphors in the representation of labour in some literary works published during the Weimar Republic. The discussion, conducted in the light of (Cultural) Literary Animal Studies, examines the novels of Erich Kästner, Vicki Baum, Hans Fallada, and Alfred Döblin and highlights the intersection between the anthroposphere and the zoosphere as a framework for the critical interpretation of reality. The zoomorphic imagery highlighted here reveals historical and social dynamics characteristic of the period and brings to the fore processes of subjugation, exclusion, and discipline typical of modernity. Animal imagery thus emerges as a critical tool that exposes identity tensions, social fractures, and contradictions within the industrial system, and encourages reflection on the use of the zoomorphic sphere in representing the crises of modern societies.

Il contributo indaga il ruolo delle metafore animali nella descrizione del lavoro in alcune opere letterarie pubblicate negli anni della Repubblica di Weimar. La riflessione, condotta alla luce dei (Cultural) Literary Animal Studies sui romanzi degli autori Erich Kästner, Vicki Baum, Hans Fallada e Alfred Döblin, mira a evidenziare l’intersezione tra antroposfera e zoosfera quale dimensione di interpretazione critica della realtà. Le immagini zoomorfe qui evidenziate rivelano dinamiche storiche e sociali tipiche dell’epoca e fanno emergere processi di assoggettamento, esclusione e disciplinamento propri della modernità. L’immaginario animale si configura così come strumento critico che rivela tensioni identitarie, fratture sociali e contraddizioni del sistema industriale e invita a riflettere sul ricorso alla sfera zoomorfa nella rappresentazione della crisi delle società moderne.
