The article proposes a non-aristotelian reading of Pietro Aretino’s Orazia that subverts the hierarchical order of the six parts of tragedy in the Poetics and stresses the importance of spectacle, the least integral of all to the poet’s art according to Aristotle. Focusing on the deixis in the play but also on the reproduction of topographical reality on the stage in the Talanta and the Cortigiana, this perspective allows for reconsideration of the relationship between the literary form of the Orazia and its historical context, leading to a new interpretation of the reason why Aretino attempted to gain favor with Pope Paul III precisely by dedicating him a tragedy.

Abstract
The article proposes a non-aristotelian reading of Pietro Aretino’s Orazia that subverts the hierarchical order of the six parts of tragedy in the Poetics and stresses the importance of spectacle, the least integral of all to the poet’s art according to Aristotle. Focusing on the deixis in the play but also on the reproduction of topographical reality on the stage in the Talanta and the Cortigiana, this perspective allows for reconsideration of the relationship between the literary form of the Orazia and its historical context, leading to a new interpretation of the reason why Aretino attempted to gain favor with Pope Paul III precisely by dedicating him a tragedy.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
