Juan Carlos Fa Robaina (1925-2006), grandson of the Sardinian physician Giovanni Battista Fa, who migrated from Sardara to Uruguay in the second half of the 19th century, was an eminent man of culture and political figure of the Republic of the Eastern Bank of Uruguay (Banda Oriental). Lecturer of history, journalist and lawyer; from 1962 he became a member of parliament for the Partido Colorado, and later on, in 1970, he was elected to the Senate: in March 1972 he hold the position of Deputy Minister for Education and Culture under the command of Julio Maria Sanguinetti, future president of Uruguay. In the aftermath of the military dictatorship (1973-1984) he was elected to the Senate once again (1984-1990). From his involvement in politics and true passion for both his Italian and Uruguayan origins, in the Department of Salto, several newspaper articles remain along with some publications. Among those, it is worth mentioning the book Cartas a un diputado, published in 1972, which gives an unmerciful look at the Uruguayan society, hit by the 1960s crisis, and examines the controversial relationship between the politics and the patronage system which prevailed in the public administration.
