Between 19th and 20th century, southwestern Sardinia experienced deep transformation. Along with the development of the mining industry, accompanied by a rash population growth, new social structures were born: the local political and social elements merged with ideas, social issues and capacity economic coming from abroad. The associations that animated the social life of Iglesias, the capital city of the mining district of Sardinia, bore witness of this new world: Mutual Aid Associations, the Freemasons, the first sporting clubs contributed to create a new social context that was fairly comparable to continental Europe; in particular, the establishing of the Associazione Mineraria Sarda (Sardinian Mining Association) in 1896 was quite remarkable, being the first that put together the executives and the technicians from different mining companies operating in Sardinia.
