The aim of this work is to outline the criteria for the determination of periodontal bacterial species. The difficulties, the aims and the eveluation criteria to obtain a valid microbiological examination of the sub-gingival sites are analyzed. The advantages that the most advanced techniques of molecular biology ( PCR, PCR real-time ) can offer to the lab diagnosis of periodontal infections are illustrated. These methods are currently in use at the Oral Biotechnologies Laboratory (OBL) of Cagliari.
