In this essay, the language of Silvio Pellico’s My Prisons will be analyzed from a phonetic and morphological perspective. We will anticipate some elements of syntax that will be the subject of a future study. Pellico’s prose proves to be connected to the tradition in its phonetics and in its morphology, but it is its syntax that renders it more modern. The language used in My Prisons has been compared with the language of Alessandro Manzoni and we have noticed the differences and the similarities. From our systematic study of the language of My Prisons, for this article we will only excerpt a limited number of phonetic and morphological aspects, selected for their relevance for the comparison to nineteenth-century language and contemporary use. Pellico’s autobiography was published in 1832 and immediately became a model for the memories of the Risorgimento: numerous memories written in the 1800s have evidently been influenced by Pellico’s My Prisons.
