The present paper is mainly focused on the linguistic features of a specific section in the messenger’s speech in Sophocles’ Antigone, in order to try to give a fresh interpretation of it. In particular, by surveying the history of the manuscript tradition of the verse as well as the several modern and current translations, the author advances a new philological proposal for emending v. 234, so that the all-encompassing sense of the passage results as being more consistent.

Abstract

The present paper is mainly focused on the linguistic features of a specific section in the messenger’s speech in Sophocles’ Antigone, in order to try to give a fresh interpretation of it. In particular, by surveying the history of the manuscript tradition of the verse as well as the several modern and current translations, the author advances a new philological proposal for emending v. 234, so that the all-encompassing sense of the passage results as being more consistent.
