Driven by the Ocean. Italians in Zanzibar

The presence of Italians in Sub Saharan Africa has not received much attention. Although migration flows have always been – and remain – marginal from a quantitative viewpoint, there are some contexts in which the numbers of Italians are remarkable, as in the case of Zanzibar. In the mid-1980s, the archipelago opened up its economy to foreign investments. Tourism has become its most important and profitable industry, and Italians are leading the way. In the 1990s, a growing number of Italians began to settle in the archipelago, and in 2013, the number of residents in Zanzibar was approximately 200-250. This study, based on interviews, explores the evolution and current characteristics of the Italian population. It examine work and living conditions, their social life and relationship with Italian authorities in Zanzibar and in mainland Tanzania.

La presenza italiana nell’Africa subsahariana ha ricevuta scarsa attenzione. Nonostante i flussi migratori siano sempre stati – e rimangano tutt’ora – marginali da un punto di vista quantitativo, vi sono alcuni contesti ove il numero degli italiani risulta degno di nota. Il caso di Zanzibar è tra questi. Alla metà degli anni ottanta, l’arcipelago aprì i suoi mercati agli investimenti stranieri. Il turismo divenne l’industria più importante e remunerativa con gli italiani che fecero da apripista. Negli anni novanta, un numero crescente incominciò a stabilirsi nell’arcipelago e, nel 2013, il numero dei residenti italiani a Zanzibar si aggirava intorno alle 200-250 unità. Il presente studio, basato su interviste sul campo, esplora l’evoluzione e le attuali caratteristiche della presenza degli italiani nell’arcipelago attraverso i luoghi in cui lavorano e vivono, le relazioni instauratesi tra di loro e con le autorità italiane a Zanzibar e nella terraferma tanzanese.
