Italiani in Africa, tra (dis)continuità e rinnovamento

The history of the Italian presence in Africa has received little attention from scholars. Although migratory flows to Africa have been relatively limited (especially when compared with those to other destinations), the story of the Italians on the continent is certainly not inconsequential. A recent resumption of Italian emigration also involves Africa. Although the continent is still not among the main destinations, in certain contexts, such as the tourism sector, the Italian presence is today significant. Starting with the history of this presence, this paper – which is based on primary sources - focuses on recent migration to the continent, using two case studies: Tunisia and Zanzibar. In Tunisia, the Italian presence is not new: the country has hosted one of the largest Italian communities of the Mediterranean. The Italian presence in Zanzibar, however, is very recent and linked to the development of the tourism sector, to which Italians have contributed in significant ways..

Per lungo tempo la storia della presenza italiana nel continente africano ha ricevuto scarsa attenzione da parte degli studiosi. Per quanto i flussi migratori verso l’Africa siano stati relativamente limitati (soprattutto se comparati a quelli verso altre mete), la storia degli italiani nel continente non può certo definirsi irrilevante. La recente ripresa dell’emigrazione italiana coinvolge anche l’Africa. Sebbene, come nel passato, il continente non sia tra le mete principali, anche oggi, in determinati contesti, la presenza italiana è significante. Partendo dalla storia di tale presenza e dallo studio della stessa, questo contributo – basato su fonti primarie – si concentra sulla recente migrazione verso il continente, presentando due casi in particolare: quello tunisino e quello zanzibarino. In Tunisia la presenza italiana non è una novità: il Paese ha ospitato una delle comunità italiane più importanti del Mediterraneo. La presenza italiana a Zanzibar, invece, è decisamente recente e legata allo sviluppo del settore turistico, al quale gli italiani hanno contribuito in maniera significativa.
