In a brief essay in 1971, Bruno Zevi emphasized how Romanesque architecture in Sardinia was influenced by architectural models that were transferred to the island without any critical interpretation. On the contrary, the results of this migration of models have undergone, over time, such manipulation as to form not an autonomous style but true inventions influenced by the context, by the author of the work, and by the availability of materials and construction techniques. The aim of this paper is thus to document, through archaic, traditional and modern architectural cultures, how this critical interpretation of foreign models has produced extraordinary unique works and, in some cases, has evolved into a "school", in the sense of a cultural and stylistic unity. This is not, therefore, an exhaustive catalogue of architecture in Sardinia, but a selection of a few examples characterised by this particular capacity for invention and variation of consolidated models, strongly marked by the identity of this island.
In un breve saggio del 1971 Bruno Zevi sottolineava come l’architettura romanica in Sardegna fosse influenzata dai modelli architettonici che venivano trasferiti nell’isola senza alcuna interpretazione critica. Al contrario, gli esiti di questa migrazione di modelli hanno subito, nel tempo, una manipolazione tale da formare non una stilistica autonoma ma delle vere e proprie invenzioni influenzate dal contesto, dall’autore dell’opera, dalla disponibilità di materiali e tecniche costruttive. Questo scritto vuole così documentare, attraverso le culture architettoniche arcaiche, tradizionali e moderne come questa interpretazione critica di modelli estranei abbia prodotto straordinarie opere uniche e, in alcuni casi, si sia evoluta in una “scuola”, nel senso di una unitarietà culturale e stilistica. Non si tratta, quindi, di un catalogo esaustivo dell’architettura in Sardegna ma di una selezione di alcuni esempi connotati da questa particolare capacità di invenzione e variazione di modelli consolidati fortemente connotati dall’identità di quest’isola.
