The paper explores the proto-sustainability condition of Nuragic architecture, recently included within the UNESCO tentative list. Investigating the nuragic function conceals a principle of extreme spatial and functional flexibility; the use of autochthonous materials emerging from the land refers to a principle of stereotomic durability of the work; moreover, the reasoned moving, as a result of the fatigue and limited possibility of transport of the stone, insists on principles of formal economy and self-sufficiency, where the reasoned disposition in the territory is intrinsically con-nected to the genius loci. The merely historicist condition to which these architectures are most often relegated needs liberation. The goal is to evaluate them as devices of synthesis and containers of unprecedented values. In this way, nuragic monuments become potential bearers of instances that configure a state of proto-sustainability, a repository of good building practices from which it is still possible to learn.
