The article examines the situation of German as a foreign language in Sardinia during the period 2018–2023. It analyses the demographic, economic, and educational policy conditions, the current status and development of German teaching positions in public schools, as well as the number of students enrolled at the two Sardinian universities in Cagliari and Sassari. Despite the central economic importance of German, particularly for the regional tourism sector, the survey reveals a significant decline in the provision of German language education and in interest in the German language, which appears to be increasingly perceived as no longer relevant to the local labour market.

Der Beitrag untersucht die Entwicklung und den Stellenwert des Deutschen als Fremdsprache in Sardinien im Zeitraum von 2018 bis 2023. Im Mittelpunkt der Analyse stehen die demografischen, wirtschaftlichen und bildungspolitischen Rahmenbedingungen, die Entwicklung der Lehrerstellen für Deutsch an staatlichen Schulen sowie die Studierendenzahlen an den beiden sardischen Universitäten in Cagliari und Sassari. Trotz der hohen wirtschaftlichen Bedeutung der deutschen Sprache, insbesondere für den regionalen Tourismussektor, zeigt die Bestandsaufnahme einen deutlichen Rückgang sowohl des Bildungsangebots als auch des Interesses am Deutschen. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass die Sprache auf dem lokalen Arbeitsmarkt zunehmend als weniger relevant wahrgenommen wird.
