This study aims to examine altering word forms recurring in the nineteenth and twentieth century correspondence, contained in AITER and CEOD, and aims to identify the specific processes of change in relation to the letter genre. Through the research of topological, functional and semantics the known values of the altered forms (the expressive-emotional and stylistic) are confirmed. These become significantly more frequent in the closing statements, and are configured pragmatically as compensation and mitigation of emotional detachment that the closure of the text implies. The semantic interpretation of the altered words is attentive to the individuality of the language used and content of the individual writers has also allowed us to focus on these denser areas in which the alterative process is expressed: the concrete spheres of physical, economic and abstract categories of space-time, the sphere of correspondence, and the sphere of the daily life. Finally, we identified some strategies that support the role of the altered forms expanding their functions and allowing for their general utility, and to ascertain their cooperative nature, their use in series or sequences, through a mechanism of exposure, generating effectively an amplification and qualifying as one of the links of the network of allusive references that engage the recipient in the letter writer’s intentions.
