This work is part of the Research Project of National Interest (PRIN 2004) titled “Stature, health and migration: Italian military and other services”. In this phase of the research the statural and ponderal characteristics of Sardinian recruits from 1980 were analyzed. Through the calculation of BMI (Body Mass Index) the incidence of overweight and obesity in the island have been examined, taking in to consideration the subdivision for: provinces, zones with different altitudes, rural and urban areas. The results concerning the height show that in Sardinian population are still present the effects of secular trend. The analysis of BMI highlights a significant degree of heterogeneity in the distribution of BMI further inland Sardinia. The province which presented the highest values for BMI was Olbia-Tempio, which has been characterized to possess the highest percentage of obese individuals, whereas Nuoro had the highest percentage of individuals that are in the overweight groupings with respect to their age group. Moreover, it was put in to evidence a negative correlation between the percentage of individuals suffering from overweight and the zones found in higher altitudes. The diverse incidence of obesity and overweight between the rural and urban areas do not appear to be statistically significant. These data could be useful for the planning for intervention, prevention and treatment for obesity and being overweight, and for the eventual studies aimed at determining the respective genetic factors and predisposition in the Sardinian population.

Abstract
These data could be useful for the planning for intervention, prevention and treatment for obesity and being overweight, and for the eventual studies aimed at determining the respective genetic factors and predisposition in the Sardinian population.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
